As commuters enter the University District, there is a stark difference between the rough-hewn UDistrct and the lush, park-like campus of The university of Washington. To extend welcome, I worked with muralist Stevie Shao to bring joy into the journey by transforming an entire building into a canvas.
The mural has transformed the neighborhood and become an iconic landmark with high social engagement.
The wall closest to campus shouts the university's tagline "Be Boundless".
Shao uses a mix of Chinese, indigenous, and Scandinavian myth and symbology, creating a work that feels "of the place" where it lives.
The color palette is unexpected for UW's world of purple and gold, but it brings a burst of sunny joy to the neighborhood.
As the sun changes, the color of the mural shifts too giving different experiences every day.
